Brief Company History

About 40 years ago the founder of Mardyke Miniature Railways, Des De Smedt decided to use his extensive training and experience in engineering to further his enthusiasm for trains by building his own garden railway. He chose 7.25" gauge and constructed rail from flat bar, the first locomotive he ever built was a Self Propelled Wagon which was driven by pushing and pulling an alternating handle to move either forwards or backwards, soon after he built 2 DMU's powered by 2 stroke engines through mechanical gearboxes and after using these to develop different power and drive systems he developed a 4 stroke Petrol/Hydrostatic Drive system and then designed the more powerful Diesel/Hydraulic drive system.
